About

A surgeon who listens first — and understands athletes because he is one

After seven years practicing in Northern Virginia, Dr. Christopher Bourke, DPM recently joined The Orthopedic Group as a foot and ankle surgeon — dedicated to helping patients stay active, healthy, and moving without pain, now serving patients across Loudoun County. He is board-certified by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery — in Foot Surgery and in Reconstructive Rearfoot / Ankle Surgery.

His approach starts with your goals. He prioritizes non-surgical therapies and rehabilitation whenever possible — including regenerative options such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections for suitable tendon and soft-tissue problems — and turns to surgery when it is truly necessary — drawing on training in complex reconstruction, sports injuries, minimally invasive techniques, and total ankle replacement.

That judgment is shaped by an unusual perspective: Dr. Bourke is a former Division I cross-country and track athlete at the University of Delaware who still competes today, with a 2:24 marathon personal best at the 2025 London Marathon. He knows what it means to train, to be sidelined, and to work your way back.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Bourke remains an avid competitive runner and enjoys spending time with his wife and young daughter. Northern Virginia is home — he and his wife have planted roots here.

For runners & athletes

The foot & ankle surgeon who understands athletes

Reconstruction and ankle replacement stay central to this practice — but for runners and active patients, there is a difference between being told to stop, and being given a plan to come back.

Division I cross-country and track

Dr. Bourke competed in cross-country and track at the University of Delaware — captain of the cross-country team, with All-Mid Atlantic Regional and CAA All-Conference 1st team honors — and still runs competitively today. Training load, footwear, and return-to-run timelines are conversations he has lived.

Recovery & Rehabilitation Protocols

What recovery usually looks like after Achilles repair and after an ankle fracture — with or without surgery — plus a staged return to running. Work through these phases with your physical therapist and Dr. Bourke’s office at each follow-up.

Timelines are approximate and vary by injury severity, age, health and goals. Your surgeon’s specific post-operative instructions override any general protocol here. Do not advance weightbearing or exercises without clearance.

How care works

Conservative first. Surgical when necessary.

  • Listen to the goal first

Every plan starts with what you want to get back to — work, sport, family life — and is measured against it.

  • Non-surgical options first

Therapy, rehabilitation, bracing, and activity modification are prioritized whenever they offer a real path forward — and for suitable tendon and soft-tissue problems, regenerative options such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections are part of that conversation.

  • Advanced surgery when it counts

When surgery is needed, your diagnosis, imaging, and surgical care are coordinated through The Orthopedic Group in Loudoun County, with rehabilitation built into the recovery plan.

  • Second opinions welcome

Complex reconstruction, failed prior surgery, and trauma cases are a core part of this practice — bring your imaging and your questions.

Questions

Before your first visit

Appointments are scheduled through The Orthopedic Group. Call (703) 777-3262 (Mon–Fri, 8am–4pm) or use his provider page at The Orthopedic Group. Walk-ins are welcome at the Lansdowne office.
No. His stated approach is to prioritize non-surgical therapies and rehabilitation whenever possible, and to use surgery when it is necessary — after walking through the alternatives with you.
Yes. Second opinions, complex reconstruction, and failed prior foot or ankle surgery are a referral focus of the practice. Bring your imaging and any prior operative reports to the visit.
That is not the starting point here. As a former Division I cross-country and track athlete with a 2:24 marathon best, Dr. Bourke builds plans around return to running where it is safely possible — including staged return-to-running plans after surgery.
Yes. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections are offered as a non-surgical, regenerative option to discuss for suitable tendon and soft-tissue problems. Whether PRP fits your case is decided in consultation, after an exam and imaging — it is not right for every problem, and no outcome is guaranteed.
Candidacy depends on your arthritis pattern, alignment, bone quality, and activity goals, and is decided after an exam and imaging. Read the full Total Ankle Replacement in Loudoun County page for how the evaluation works, then book a visit to discuss your case.
No. Many bunions are managed with wider, softer footwear, inserts or orthotics, padding and activity changes, and surgery is considered only when pain and shoe problems persist despite those measures. Whether a minimally invasive approach suits you depends on the size and pattern of the deformity and the condition of the joint — it is not right for every bunion, and no faster recovery is guaranteed. Read the full Bunion Surgery page, including the minimally invasive bunion surgery section, then book a visit to discuss your foot.
